Lavinia Dixon Lombard, age 101, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest at her residence on Sunday, September 1, 2024. She was a native of St. James, LA and a resident of Marrero, LA. Lavinia was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She continued her studies at Southern University in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where she received her BA and M. Ed degrees. Lavinia later furthered her education by attending Loyola and Xavier Universities earning her Master’s plus 30 graduate hours. She began her teaching career in 1966 and dedicated over 26 years of service as an educator with the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Lavina taught at Bridge City Elementary School, and for 8 consecutive summers with Operation Readiness and the Head Start Program at several Jefferson Parish Public Schools. As a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church of Harvey, LA, for over 90 years, Lavinia fulfilled the purpose that God had for her. Under the leadership of three different pastors, she held several different positions and participated with numerous ministries in the church, including Church Secretary, Deaconess, Usher Board, President of Willing Workers, and Pastor Support Ministry, to just name a few. Lavinia’s vibrant spirit, unwavering faith in God, and dedication to living life fully will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her. Beloved wife of the late Mack Cushingberry II by first marriage, and the late Edward Lombard by second marriage. Devoted mother of the late Mack Cushingberry III. Daughter of the late Robert Dixon, Sr. and Jane Joseph Dixon. Loving sister of Hilda D. Crosby, Curtis Dixon, and the late Helen Dixon Ford, Lawrence Dixon, Sr., Robert Dixon, Jr., Charles Dixon, Sr., and Joseph Humphrey, Sr. Also left to treasure her memories are her nephew and godchild Cornel Crosby, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, 922 Estalote Avenue, Harvey, LA on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Louis Harrison, officiating.Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
