JOSEPHINE GROSS PHOENIX

Josephine “Peenie” “Auntie” Gross Phoenix, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was a native and resident of New Orleans, LA. Josephine attended Booker T. Washington High School and was retired seamstress of Schrams Brothers and Deansgate Sewing Factory.  She loved Mardi Gras and was known to attend as many parades as she could. Josephine loved to brag about the throws she managed to catch and tell the story of how she accomplished it. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Phoenix. Loving mother and best friend of Debra Phoenix Campbell. Adored grandmother of Jeramie Campbell. Daughter of the late Joseph A. Gross and Lillian Bloomfield. Sister of Carles (the late Byron) Ramie and the late Gladys (Lionel) Philip, Nowella (Ike) Johnson, Felix, Clifton, and Albert Lewis. Loving aunt and great aunt of Karen A. Lewis and Michael Lewis, whom she loved as a daughter and a grandson. Cousin of Errol Marcelin and Claudette Early. Devoted friend of Ruth White. Also left to cherish her memories are her nieces Desiree’ Ramie and Carole DeClouet, her grandson’s father Willie Campbell, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also priest and parishioners of Corpus Christi Church and all neighboring churches; members of A Community Voice (formerly ACORN); faculty, staff, students, and alumni of St. Augustine High School are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi Church, 2022 St. Bernard Ave. New Orleans, LA on Friday, July 28, 2022, at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:00a.m. until service time at the church.
