CURTIS LONDON, JR.

Curtis London, Jr., age 81, earned his eternal reward on Sunday, January 14, 2024. He was a native of Vacherie, LA, and a resident of Harvey, LA. Curtis was a 1960 graduate of Lincoln High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Southern University New Orleans and a Master’s of Education degree in Administration from the University New Orleans. He was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. London was a dedicated educator who began his career as a science teacher at his beloved Lincoln High School. However, he quickly took his place in history at 27 when he was appointed assistant principal at Fairchild Middle School to protect and support the Black students entering formerly all-white schools. He was part of the set of young Black administrators assigned to integrate the schools ten years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision abolished segregation in schools. He retired from the Jefferson Parish Public School System in 1998. He was assistant principal of John Ehret High School and Ellender Middle, and principal of Henry Ford Jr. High. He was an active member of the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Choir, Male Chorus, and Praise Team. He directed the youth choir, served as a Deacon, and managed the Multi-Purpose Center. London was also a member of the Westside Missionary Baptist Association Mass Choir. Beloved husband of 56 years to LaJune Wilson London. Devoted father to Nicolette London (Robert) Hudson and Curtis (LaKeysha) London, III. Doting grandfather of Chelsey London, Nia Hudson, Robert “Drew” Hudson, Jailyn London, and Curtis London, IV. Son of the late Curtis London Sr. and Almedia London. Grandson of the late Rev. Harry London, Rev. Solomon James, and Julien James. Loving brother of Herbert (Frankie) London, Julia (Al) Wells, Debra Anders, Charles London, and the late Rev. Dr. Ernest London. Brother-in-law of Marie Garrison London; also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Mount Pilgrim Baptist and Shiloh Baptist Churches, and neighboring churches; members of the Westside Missionary Baptist Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., alumni, and employees of JPPS are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, 922 Estalote Ave., Harvey, LA on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10:00a.m., Reverend Louis Brooks Harrison, officiating. Viewing will be held from 8:30a.m. - 9:50a.m.; Kappa Burial Ceremony at 9:15a.m. Interment: Restlawn Park Cemetery-Avondale, LA.
