Kermit Benn

Kermit "Cun-Nay" Benn, the well-known proprietor of Benn's Grocery Store in Algiers, La, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the age of 77. He was a third generation in the family grocery business which was established by his grandfather in the late 1800's. He was a lifelong resident of Algiers, La.; a man of strong faith in God, a gifted gospel singer and a generous philanthropist. Beloved husband of the late Barbara Hawkins Benn. Cherished father of George (Deon), Robin, Everett, Ivan (Linda Brown) and Kiara Benn. Adored grandfather of Desmon, Nia, Devon, Trinity, Curry, Lauren and Kingston. Kermit was the youngest of eleven children born to the late Isaac, Sr. and Stella McDonald Benn. Brother of Helen Benn Price, Isaac Benn, Jr. and the late Liza Benn Villere, Cora Benn Rose, Melinda Benn Ross (Eugene), Howard (Clementine), Hersey, Clarence (Geneva), Eldred, and Charlie, Sr. (Marlene) Benn. Brother-in-law of Percy Rose, Sr., Othello (Loretta) Edwards, Jr. and the late Lawrence Price, Sr. Godfather of Joyce Price, Shonda Mosley and Helen B. Jones; also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousin other relatives and friends. "Cun- Nay" was an original die hard New Orleans Saints fan. He was a well-dressed man who always sported a hat for all occasions. He was simply "Old School". Mr. Benn's primary focus and commitment was to his family, his business, and his community in the "Cut Off" area of Algiers. He was a Blessed Man and a blessing to many of those in need. He gave monetarily to churches, schools, customers, and family members he also showed his love through giving. He also enjoyed sharing his talent for singing. His legacy lives on and will be deeply missed by all who were touched by his love. Relatives and friends of the family, also Pastors, Officers, and Members of Second Baptist, Second Nazarine Baptist Church, Asbury UMC, Faith Is Victory Church and all neighboring churches; patrons of Benn's Grocery; employees of Bordens Diary; faculty and staff of Algiers Technology Academy, Hynes Charter and members of L. B. Landry Class of 57 are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Second Baptist Church, 2836 Sullen Place, Algiers, La. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00a.m. Pastor Taza Green, Sr.-officiating Visitation will begin at 9:00a.m.-10:50a.m., ONLY.
