John Jackson Henry

John J. "Unc" Henry, age 88, entered into the joy of eternal life on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at West Jefferson Medical Center. He was a native of Rushville, LA in Plaquemines Parish and a resident of Gretna, LA. Beloved husband of the late Theresa "Mama Tee" Henry. Son of the late John, Sr. and Clarinda R. Henry. Devoted father of Johnny R. (Iman) Henry. Grandfather of Johnny Ray Sumlin. Loving stepfather of Harold Lewis, Jr., Theresa Evans , Orville Lewis, Olivia Common, Olive L. Magee, Oliver Lewis, Kerry P. Lewis, Karen Bradley , Kevin O. Lewis, Kenneth Alexander and the late William Lewis, Louise Pierce and Michael Lewis. Brother of Earl Henry, Marion L. Varnado and the late Thelma Diggs, Mildred K. Little, Ellen H. Kelly and Elvira Henry; also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Henry was a faithful member of St. Mark Baptist Church where he served diligently as a Deacon and Recording Secretary. He was a former Seaman with the Merchant Marines and retired from Hydril Inc. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers and members of St. Mark Baptist Church, St. James A.M.E. of New Orleans and all neighboring churches are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at St. Mark Baptist Church, 1929 Huey P. Long Ave. Gretna, LA on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 10:00am Pastor Joseph L. Hampton, Sr., officiating Visitation will be held from 8:00am- 9:50am at the above named church.
